“Herbal Medicine’s Toxicology Often Unknown” What Does This Mean?

Question by Amjad: “herbal medicine’s toxicology often unknown” what does this mean?
I am a translator, I am translating this book about natural remedies to treat depression, and it is comparing herbal medicines with pharmaceutical drugs in a box. Under “Herbal” it says “Toxicology often unknown” what does this mean?

Also, wanted to make sure of a few things:
“Pure compound not available” does this mean that we don’t know the original compound of the herbal medicine?
“Mechanism often unknown” aaand does this mean that we don’t know how a herbal medicine exactly works?

Thank you in advance!
