Clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It means you can become depressed for no reason at all. It’s not like the depression that comes from losing a loved one or not getting that promotion you so wanted and etc. That sort of depression usually passes after a while, Clinical depression requires medication and counselling. It never goes away.

The “clinical” designation is made just to point out that the symptoms of depression are classic symptoms that are scientifically defined as accompanying a diagnosis of depression. Some depression is normal. When it becomes “clinical” it is generally considered a chronic illness that needs intervention.
