Spirit of the Streets

Spirit of the Streets – Each Tuesday afternoon, the strains of an unlikely assortment of voices run through vocal scales in a tiny church hall. Under the charismatic direction of Musical Director, Bernard Carney, the divergent voices come together to create the Spirit of the Streets Choir. While members of the choir may struggle to communicate in everyday life, they are proud of their singing and express themselves through song as they have never done before. The choir performs regularly at various venues and public forums around Perth and although there is strong audience demand, not all members perform publicly due to their physical disabilities, intellectual impairment or their involvement in drug or alcohol rehabilitation programs. For these members, the choir provides tremendous support by offering a safe place from which to begin their journey back into the wider community. For some it has become their family.
