I have tended to cut myself to feel a little better especially after being dumped but I don’t do it too much.

Wrong section for this question, but anyway, this is from the Mayo Clinic:

“While self-injury may bring a momentary sense of calm and a release of tension, it’s usually followed by guilt and shame and the return of painful emotions. Self-injury is often done on impulse, so it’s sometimes considered an impulse-control behavior problem. Self-injury may accompany a variety of mental illnesses, such as depression, eating disorders and borderline personality disorder. Self-injury is also known as self-harm, self-injurious behavior, self-mutilation and parasuicide. ”

In other words, it is not a healthy way to deal with depression, anxiety, etc. You are telling yourself you are not worthy otherwise you would not have been dumped, done poorly on a test, got in an argument……..all normal parts of our lives. Instead you learn other, nonharmful ways of dealing with emotions.

Stopping cutting is not easy. You probably need help. Do some investigation to see if there’s a mental help helpline you can call and talk to someone trained in listening to your problems and helping you find a way to deal with them, other than cutting yourself.

I have cut myself before, not that much, but to feel better when stressed out etc. People notice right off the bat and I come up with things like I fell or whatever and only my closest friends know and they’re like it’s bad stop! But if you have no intention of killing yourself, coming from someone who has done it, it does leave scars but that’s the only negative effect.
