No you don’t take anti depressants, but you do take a mood stabiliser. Antidepressants are contradictory to bipolar disorder. You end up taking other mood stabilisers like lithium to treat this disorder.

It’s depression because the majority of the time is spent in major depressive episodes, and while the upswings are very rare, they are explained biochemically by the same issues that have led psychiatrists to identify the details of major depressive episodes.
