Do You Think I Might Have an Eating Disorder?

Question by Brooke: Do You Think I Might Have An Eating Disorder?
I know I can’t get diagnosed over the internet. But since my mom won’t be taking me to a doctor anytime soon, I just want some opinions/advice. And please don’t be mean about it.

Again, I know I have to go to a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. But I honestly think I might have EDNOS.

1. I’m 5’5″ and 128 pounds, so I’m in the healthy range. My highest was 142 in August 2012 and my lowest was 119 in March 2013.
2. I know it’s bad, but I’m an obsessive calorie counter and I tend to restrict, starve, and fast frequently.
3. But I also have plenty of binging episodes. Typically they’re between 1000-1500 calories. And the only way I’m able to purge is through exercise or I try to drink dark coffee and use it as a natural laxative.
4. I constantly think I’m fat. I don’t remember a single day where I haven’t felt fat, even after losing 21 pounds in a 2-3 month period.
5. I feel guilt after EVERY SINGLE TIME I eat. Whether I eat something healthy or not.
6. I feel like I’m judged when I’m eating around other people. I’m self-conscious eating around people.
7. I tend to analyze what other people are eating, and I try guessing how many calories they’re eating. Sometimes I can tell exactly how many they’re eating because I have a lot of foods memorized.
8. I exercise 5-6 days a week, sometimes even 7.
9. When I’m restricting, I try to keep it at 500-700 calories, depending on the day. If I go over I have to burn it with exercise.
10. I’m VERY preoccupied with food. I spend a lot of time planning out my meals, portions, calories, etc. I’m also preoccupied with planning workouts.

Does that sound like an eating disorder to you? And if it does, can you suggest anything that might be able to help me? I’m so tired of feeling the way I do, and I’m debating on whether to try some sort of “recovery” or not.

And please don’t be mean with the answers. I know eating disorders are bad, they’re not glamorous, etc. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to suffer with one.

Yes. Go see a doctor. Eating disorders are the psychiatric condition with the highest mortality (mortality = chance of dying from it), even higher than bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
