My Grandmother Is at a Rehab Center and Has a Ileostomy Bag.

Question by vernatt_16: My grandmother is at a rehab center and has a ileostomy bag.
My grandmother is at a rehab center and has a ileostomy bag. The nurses let the bag get full and sometimes bust before coming in to change it. They are supposed to be using a powder when they apply the bag and they are not. The paste they are using is irritating the skin under the bag and they are rubbing it hard when they clean it and is causing the skin to come completely off around the stoma. I was wondering if someone could tell me how to clean the skin properly and your opinion on what these nurses are and are NOT doing. Thanks

I ALSO HAVE A BAG, AND FIRST, IF YOUR GRANDMOTHER IS IN BED HER BAG SHOULD BE HOOKED TO A DRAIN BOTTLE VIA A HOSE. THE POWDER YOU SPEAK OF CAUSED MY SKIN TO BECOME RAW, SO I QUIT USING IT (GET SOME OF THE POWDER WET AND RUB IT TOGETER ON YOU FINGERS) FOR CLEANING I WASH THE AREA EVERY DAY WITH MILD SOAP AND WATER. THE PASTE TO ME IS USELESS. AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE NURSES ARE UNCARING AND UNPROFESSIONAL. MOVE HER TO ANOTHER FACILITY

It’s hard to answer on what the nurses are and aren’t doing as we can’t actually see what they’re doing – there are many different ways of looking after an ostomy, there is no ‘one size fits all answer’ as to how to care for one, basically it’s what works for the person (which may not work for the next person – some people use paste, others don’t, some use skin prep, others don’t… you get the picture!).

What I would advise you to do is see if you can get in touch with a stoma nurse via her surgeon or your local hospital. Another good resource would be a local support group – whereabouts are you? If you’re in the USA, try the UOAA (United Ostomy Associations of America) website at http://www.uoaa.org/ they have a list of all the local assocs there. If you’re elsewhere, let us know and I’ll try and point you in the right direction.

Good luck.
