OBJECTIVES: Few studies describe the trajectories of cognitive function for hip-fracture patients following hospital discharge and the treatment effects of interdisciplinary intervention on cognitive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore the 2-year postoperative trajectory for cognitive function of older hip-fracture patients and cognitive effects of an interdisciplinary intervention. METHODS: Of 160 subjects randomly assigned to groups, 29 (35.8%) in the control group (n?=?81) and 30 (38.0%) in the intervention group (n?=?79) were cognitively impaired at admission. The intervention group received geriatric consultation, continuous rehabilitation, and discharge planning. Subjects’ cognitive function was measured using the mini mental state examination Taiwan version at admission, 6, 12, 18, and 24?months after discharge and analyzed using hierarchical generalized linear models. RESULTS: Patients who received the intervention program had 75% less likelihood of being cognitively impaired 6?months following discharge than those who received routine care (odds ratio?=?0.25, p?HubMed – rehab

Specificity of Homework Compliance Effects on Treatment Outcome in CBT: Evidence from a Controlled Trial on Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia.

J Clin Psychol. 2013 Mar 15;
Cammin-Nowak S, Helbig-Lang S, Lang T, Gloster AT, Fehm L, Gerlach AL, Ströhle A, Deckert J, Kircher T, Hamm AO, Alpers GW, Arolt V, Wittchen HU

OBJECTIVES: Although homework assignments are an integral component of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and relate to positive therapy outcomes, it is unclear whether specific homework types and their completion have specific effects on outcome. METHOD: Data from N = 292 patients (75% female, mean age 36 years) with panic disorder and agoraphobia and treated with standardized CBT were analyzed with homework compliance quality and quantity for different types of homework serving as predictors for different outcome variables. RESULTS: Quality ratings of homework completion were stronger outcome predictors than quantitative compliance ratings. Exposure homework was a better outcome predictor than homework relating to psychoeducation and self-monitoring. CONCLUSION: Different aspects of homework compliance and specific homework types might differentially relate to CBT outcome. HubMed – rehab

Evidence-based practice of Chinese medicine in physical rehabilitation science.

Chin J Integr Med. 2013 Mar 16;
de Sá Ferreira A

Chinese medicine is among other traditional medical systems practiced either as a coadjutant intervention to Greek medicine or as the unique therapeutic intervention for illness prevention, treatment or rehabilitation. The complete spectrum from that traditional system includes acupuncture and moxibustion, herbal and food therapy, massage therapy (tuina), physical exercises (taijiquan), and breathing exercises (qigong). In this article, it is presented several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews on the application of all therapeutic modalities from Chinese medicine in the physical rehabilitation scenario. The discussed studies encompasses both “positive” and “negative” results of Chinese medicine intervention for disabilities due to illnesses of the nervous, musculoskeletal or cardiovascular systems. Additionally, the importance of the personalized approach for Chinese medicine and rehabilitation is emphasized together with the need for reproducible methods for pattern differentiation and intervention selection. Chinese medicine resources are recognized as promising methods for therapeutic rehabilitation and can be incorporated into the rehabilitation science. The wide variety of therapeutic resources explains why Chinese medicine is currently a multidisciplinary practice for health protection and promotion, early diagnosis and treatment as well as rehabilitation with roles in the public health care system.
