Illinois Drivers License Back After D.U.I.’S From Your Past?

Question by Rainbowler2: Illinois drivers license back after D.U.I.’S from your past?
I have heard that in Illinois, the only way that you can get your driver’s license back at a formal hearing; is if you have stopped drinking thru the means of AA, and attend meetings on a regular basis. Is this true? And why aren’t forms of “Rational Recovery” accepted? I have also read that AA only has about a 60% success rate. As long as a person stops drinking, why should it matter how it was achieved?
I have had 2 D.U.I’s; 1 in 1986, the other in 1993. I went to 2 formal hearings (no lawyer) back in 2000, but was denied both times. I have stopped drinking.
My license has been revoked since 1993. I live in Illinois; which I’ve heard is one of the hardest states to get a license reinstated after D.U.I.’s. I had the alcohol evaluation, stopped drinking, went thru all of the treatment plan at the treatment center…Shortly after they were denied the 2nd time, I started drinking again. I continued to drink, but slowed down as I got older. I have always thought about quitting again, which I did, 1 wk. ago. I then came across “Rational Recovery.org.”, and have used their techniques, and I can honestly say that I will never drink again. They don’t believe in the philosophy of “One day at a time”, and quite frankly, neither do I. Back in 1999 and 2000 I attended a few AA meetings, and didn’t like them, so I never went back. Rational Recovery really bashed the AA concept, and I can see why. I have an appointment with a treatment center, so I will keep that, and go from there. Thanks

First off. Are you revoked, or suspended. Im assuming revoked? Call your states attorney and talk to him, or go to the Secretary of States office and ask for Information specific to your case. Usually if you are going to attempt to get your license back, you will go through a court ordered alcohol counseling, with a licensed drug and alcohol counselor. Ive never heard of this AA rule you speak of. Ask about a JDP-judicial driving permit. I assume the formal hearing your talking about are the statutory summary suspension hearings?
