Can You Recognize Bipolar Versus Borderline Personality Disorder?

Question by Pippro: Can you recognize bipolar versus borderline personality disorder?
The symptoms and treatment for these two labels are very similar, as are the diagnoses criteria. Do you think the psychiatric community came up with these ‘illnesses’ to avoid the old psychiatric terms for ‘unbalanced’? If I apply these symptoms to many of my friends, they would all be eligible for medical treatment of some sort. I do not believe this condition can be accurately diagnosed without years of observation inasmuch as many people can experience short spans of one or all of the symptoms described by the psychiatric community. One can easily feign these disorders as well. What is your opinion?

An interesting question! These disorders are much misdiagnosed, even by mental health professionals, and the final determining factor may well be the response to mood stabilisers, like lithium carbonate, or Lamictal.

They won’t help those with BPD (medications are often ineffective in treating it).

Some of your friend’s problems derive from too much TV (www.mercola.com SEARCHBAR – TV) and too little Omega 3 fatty acids. The average American diet has around 10 times as much Omega 6 as Omega 3, when a far healthier ratio is 1:1

OMEGA 3:
Take at least 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, and preferably at least 1.5 grams of fish oil daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or its FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it!

Females may benefit by balancing the DHA, & EPA versions of Omega 3 in fish, or krill oil with ALA flaxseed oil Omega 3, or at least one heaped tablespoonful of ground flaxseed, daily. There is now a new version of krill oil and evening primrose oil especially formulated for females via mercola.com Vegetarians & vegans: Google: “Omega 3; algae; supplies” and use it with flaxseed.

Your friends would probably also benefit from practicing a meditation method, daily, and when needed, such as: (free) http://www.drcoxconsulting.com/managing-stress.html or http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/mindbody/a/Meditation.htm or http://www.wikihow.com/Meditate or Yoga Nidra, (no flexibility required) at http://your-mental-health.8m.com/blank_11.html

These will enable people to emotionally centre themselves, when practiced regularly, and can also help them become calmer, more self controlled people.
