From what I understand, there are two ways depression can occur, chemically or circumstantially, and there also can be a combination of both. Circumstances can cause depression! There are many things that can effect your mental and emotional state. Your diet, activity level and so on. These can effect your serotonin levels. What can start out as circumstantial depression can eventually take effect on the chemicals in your brain.

If you are going through a rough time and facing depression, the best thing you can do is eat well, be active. Try not to internalize everything, when you are depression do something that makes you feel better like run, walk , play tennis or something. This will help your serotonin levels. Also try and stay positive, write down five new things you are thankful for every night.

If you suspect there is an imbalance of chemicals, talk to your doctor. An antidepressant can help! And you don’t have to be on it forever. It will help you get a leg up on life. There are some new SSRI s that have few side effects like Lexapro.

But a good way to be treated for depression is a counselor , whether or not you are treated with medication.

I hope this helps!
