15yo Gay Friend Has “Bipolar 1 Depression” W/ Schizophrenia & ADHD. Isn’t 400mg of Seroquel Daily Too Much?

Question by Chris: 15yo gay friend has “Bipolar 1 Depression” w/ Schizophrenia & ADHD. Isn’t 400mg of Seroquel daily too much?
He takes 400 mg of Seroquil daily each and EVERY NIGHT. He’s been in substance abuse rehab wice for weed, coke, meth.

Also was put in foster care for 6 months , because he had dropped out of high school for 2 semesters. His mom is a drug addict sent to jail, his stop-mom and bio-dad refuse to” take him in” so he went to foster care.

Long story short, he’s now living with stop-mom and bio dad again after he got out of foster care. h

He’s had 14 “boyfriends-of-the-month”, and countless other sex parters.

he started therapy and saw a psychiatrist once a month.

Isn’t (4) 100mg pills of the powerfil anti-psychotic medicine too much.

Isn’t 400mg taken DAILY of Seroquel.

My friend is basically “numbed out” to the point he’s “zombie-like” where he cant feel anything.

If 400mg of a powerful anti-psychotic like Seroquel indicative of the severity of his mental illness compared to others prescribed the ame meds for the same illness?

he’s now deciding to stop all his meds “cold turkey” and start smoking weed.

I can already notice that he no longer feels “numb” and can “feel” again, but he is VERY “up/down” and changing his moods, especially since he never seems to know what he wants.

My question is: How bad is his Bipolar/Schizophrenia in order for a psychiatrist to prescibe 400mg on Seroquel DAILY!

Does 400mg mean his bipolar is extremely severe?

Seroquel is a great drug for those who really need it,the dose he was given is really not that high and could be raised at some point. I have a friend who has been on many other anti-psychotics and none did what seroquel has done for him. It took a while but he is a much different person. The acting out is a way of masking how he feels & (self medicating) hopefully this will be a stepping stone for him. Anyone that is knocked out by this drug after the first few days of adjusting should not be on it . All the other anti–psychotics are the same effect just react different on different people. After a while you will see if its working and the drugs and acting out will stop.Give it a chance!
